I have had many experiences in my life where I have been moving along with time and acting on different things with no real purpose.
I simply drifted from a task to a task either because someone else told me what to do or because I felt that it was the most suited task for that moment.
But not a single time did I ask the question of “Where is this all going?”.
You might not think that it is a big deal, but as long as you don’t have a life goal that you are moving towards, you might as well not do anything because if you are not progressing anywhere, everything that you do is a big waste of time.
Think of your day yesterday. What did you do that is going to propel you into the future and secure you a better life that you have always dreamed of? Yesterday was a bad example? Okay, choose any day in the past week that you can consider a good day for your life goal.
I bet that if you don’t even have a life goal strictly defined and write down yet, you have struggled to answer the question above. But worry not, that is not because you are lazy or indifferent. This is simply because you have not been told of the high importance of needing to set yourself goals. Life goals that will stay with you for a long time, to be exact.
Setting the goal
Clear one of the weekends that you are going to have, leave all of the electronics at home and either drive to a green area like a park or a forest and wander there, being undistracted.
While you are walking, I want you to critically think about the life that you have been having up to that point, think of all the highs as well as all the lows. Think of things that you have achieved so far and things that you have failed at.
Identify what you have right now in life in both your personal and professional life.
Ask yourself, is it what you want? Is it what you have been hoping of being or getting?
And the most important question of all, what will you be in 1 year if you change nothing? What about 5 years? 10 years?
At that point, if you are happy with where you are going to be in 10 years of time, then you are one of the lucky ones that have an extremely strong intuition to get that without a proper goal identification.
But for most of the people, that realisation will be extremely hard to swallow. Worry not. There is no need for huge changes straight away. Just make sure to write what you have decided to achieve, and daily, weekly and monthly, refer to it to check if you are still on course to get to that.
As long as you are moving in the right direction, even if it is slow, it is better than doing nothing.
